Switch to Shopify. Keep your rankings.

The rankings you earned on WooCommerce belong to your old URLs. This guide shows how those URLs change on Shopify, how to redirect them safely, and what else migration tools quietly leave behind.

[ WHY RANKINGS DROP ]

Your rankings live on URLs that are about to change

Google ranks pages, not stores. When you switch from WooCommerce to Shopify, the address of almost every page changes. Without a redirect, a ranking page becomes a 404, and the traffic it earned does not come back by itself.

WooCommerce URLShopify URL
/product/blue-cotton-kurta//products/blue-cotton-kurtaSingular becomes plural. Nothing matches by accident.
/product-category/kurtas//collections/kurtasCategories become collections.
/product-tag/summer//collections/summerTags usually map to a collection or its filter.
/shop//collections/allThe main shop page.
/my-account//accountCustomer account area.
/cart//cartSame idea, no trailing slash.
/how-to-drape-a-saree//blogs/news/how-to-drape-a-sareePosts move under a blog handle.
/about-us//pages/about-usPages move under /pages/.
Build the redirect map before you point your domain at Shopify, not after traffic falls.

How to match old URLs safely

The tempting shortcut is fuzzy matching: pick the Shopify URL that looks most similar. Do not. At a similarity score of 0.82 it paired a Nikon Z6 III with a Z7 II and a 35mm lens with an 85mm. A redirect to the wrong product is worse than a 404, because the shopper thinks they have arrived.

This is the tiered method we use, where each tier fires only when the one above cannot:

  1. 1

    Exact handle match

Strip suffixes the old site added (like -india) and match the slug to a Shopify handle. Also try the untrimmed slug.

  2. 2

    Model match

Every model number and variant word (Mini, Pro, Max, Plus) must agree on both sides. Only descriptive words may differ.

  3. 3

    Brand collection

If the product is gone, send the visitor to its brand, which is what they searched for.

  4. 4

    Category collection

Otherwise the largest matching category, so a storage drive lands on the storage hub.

  5. 5

    Leave it as 404

Anything still unmatched goes to a human. Guessing past this point is where the damage starts.

On a 656 URL set this matched 654 and left 2 as 404, recovering 99% of the clicks. Read the full case study.

SEO fields migration tools leave empty

Redirects protect the traffic you have. These protect how your new Shopify pages rank and look in search:

  • SEO title and meta description on every product. Imports often leave them empty, so Google falls back to the raw product title.
  • Product type and category, which feed Google Shopping.
  • The theme's title suffix. Many themes add your store name to every title, costing around 13 of the 60 characters Google shows.
  • Image alt text and file names carried over from WooCommerce.
  • Placeholder barcodes and SKUs. Some import tools fill them with timestamps that look real in the admin.

Check real product values, never summary counts. A Shopify coverage query can report every product as typed while every value is blank. See how 2,415 products were fixed.

[ AFTER LAUNCH ]

The first week on Shopify

  1. 1

    Submit the new sitemap

Shopify generates /sitemap.xml. Submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

  2. 2

    Spot check redirects

Open a sample of old WooCommerce URLs from every tier and confirm each returns a 301 to the right page.

  3. 3

    Watch the 404 report

Search Console shows any old URL still returning 404. Add redirects for the ones that matter.

  4. 4

    Check Merchant Center

If you run Google Shopping, confirm products are approved and landing pages resolve.

WooCommerce to Shopify SEO questions

Only if the old URLs are left to 404. WooCommerce and Shopify use different URL patterns, so every page that ranks needs a 301 redirect to its new Shopify address before the domain moves.

Search engines keep sending visitors to the old URLs, which now return 404. On one store we audited, 675 dead WooCommerce URLs still held about two thirds of every click the site had recorded.

No. Shopify's /products/, /collections/, /pages/ and /blogs/ prefixes are fixed. Redirects are the way to carry rankings across.

Often not. On one migrated catalogue 2,377 of 2,686 products had no SEO title and 2,354 had no SEO description after the import. Check real products, not summary counts.

Shopify supports large redirect lists and lets you import them in bulk from a CSV file. One store we fixed runs 654 redirects from its old WooCommerce URLs.
